Yes, even if the summer is almost over!

Summer is in full swing and that means it’s time to change the way you are taking care of your skin. Why? Because in the summer we are spending more time in the sun and the change of season affects our skin differently than the winter time does. So, where do you start to take care of your skin for the summer? It doesn’t have to be drastic, start small. Here are five simple ways to start today.

1. Invest in a lightweight moisturizer with an SPF of 30 or more

While you should be wearing SPF all year round, a moisturizer with an SPF of 30 or higher is an ideal for the summer as it’s not too heavy on your face. A sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher is also recommended for the rest of the body. Don’t forget to reapply SPF every two hours especially as we are sweating and moving a lot during this season.

What happens if you don’t wear SPF? Some of the effects of not wearing SPF can include hyperpigmentation (also known as dark spots), broken capillaries that damage the collagen and too much exposure to UV rays can lead to extreme conditions such as skin cancer.

Products we recommend from Kiehl’s Canada are the Ultra Facial Cream SPF 30 and Activated Sun Protector™ Water-Light Lotion For Face & Body. As an ISIC cardholder, you get 10%off $35+ Exclusive, so don’t forget to get your code here.

2. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables

If you’re looking to have glowing skin this summer, you need to include eating more fruits and vegetables in your diet, especially the fruits and vegetables that are in season. Instead of trying to get glowing skin from the is that it’s also delicious!

Here are a list of some summer vegetables and fruits to eat this summer:

  • Berries
  • Cherries
  • Beets
  • Apricots
  • Melons
  • Corn
  • Peppers
  • Tomatoes
  • Zucchinis
  • Rapini
  • Leek
  • Eggplant

You can find more here veggies and fruits in season here.

3. Wear hats and sunglasses

Wearing hats and sunglasses are essential during the summer season due to stronger UV rays and our increased time outside. It’s common to get dark spots/sun spots on our faces this season even when we try our best to protect our skin from the strong UV rays. If you notice that you have a few dark spots/sun spots you want to treat, we recommend this product from Kiehl’s that contains vitamin C that helps reduce dark spots but also post-acne-marks and hyperpigmentation.

Product we recommend is the Clearly Corrective™ Dark Spot Solution from Kiehl’s Canada. As an ISIC cardholder, you get 10%off $35+ Exclusive, so don’t forget to get your code here.

4. Drink lots of water!

The human body is made up of 50%-65% water. In the summer we need to keep hydrated as we’re being more active compared to the colder months. It’s easy to turn to summer drinks such as iced teas and soft drinks to beat the heat but it’s still best to have water as your main source of hydration as it has a better overall effect on your body and skin. Drinking too many sugar drinks can lead to inflammation of the skin.

5. Get some exercise!

Apart from being a good source of energy, exercising has many great benefits when it comes to our skin including improved blood flow to nourish cells, preventing and reversing the signs of aging, and improving overall health.

Yes, even though it’s August we still need to be taking care of our skin properly this summer to make sure it’s healthy and at it’s best each day and in the future.
